Wildwood Road

1.
We drove out through the dust, Past the abandoned buildings & run-down warehouses. Out to the Kingdom of Grapes & the Luminous Peach Trees. Out to where the chain-link fence Bent down beneath the weight of an ancient tree. They were all there: Fathers & Mothers, Sisters & Liars & Killers... They were all buried there. I left that town & moved north Where the river cut the city in half & the trouble I made kept me up for days.

California 03:48
Grapes cut a long, green scar Across the face of the Valley floor. Like all wounds it tells the song Of how the West was won. Out in California... The harbour town's a killing floor Washed w methamphetamine. & all the longshoreman's hands they bleed Through a cracked glove upon the wheel. Out in California, you'll find the sun. Up north the capital gain Make the rules for everyone. A man w a suit & a chain He's w you then he's gone. Crowned w a headful of thorns Sodom & maybe Gomorrah Out in California... They spend their nights in bars, then they ride off in a stretch limousine. Maps to the movie stars, Because they wanna make you believe... Out in California Out in California Out in California You'll find the sun.

There was a time & a place I felt the wheel & it's grace King Harvest sang in the field. So we drank to what we made Then the season changed Soon I felt the long & the slow decay. Why must I be the thief? Why must you see my grief? I can't explain what comes over me. Then I was crushed by the weight I hung it all up & I waved Goodbye to the crowds & the hands from the stage. A whispering sound I received though the pines & the trees In a motel dream I swam from the beach to the sea. Why must I be the thief? Why must you see my grief? Tears of rage roll down my cheeks I can't explain what comes over me. Home so far away Home so far away Home so far away Why must I be the thief? Why must you see my grief? Tears of rage roll down my cheeks I can't explain what comes over me.

The room was rich w magazines The chain had been released. In the darkness, you could see Her fingers sick w rings. There were no more wedding bells & the planes had split the trees. There you sat on the edge of the bed W The Queen of the London Scene. It was a time of infamy A time of fallen kings. in the courtroom you'd been laid bare The truth had been decreed. You thought you might get away Oh you thought that you might break free... That's when you found out That you'd been ensnared By The Queen of the London Scene. In the orchard while you dreamed A shadow did appear. There was something cold & dark Poured in your ear. You tried to listen & you tried to hear But there were only screams. & a mouthful of bad advice From The Queen of the London Scene.
5.
You're all alone & the voice that you hear down the hall Is your mother's voice, Your mother's ghost. So you pick up the phone. You call & you let it ring & ring Till you find out what you already know: There's nobody home. If you keep on running from The hounds you can't escape... If you keep on reaching for The hand you cannot save There won't be any time to make your getaway. The money you spent Is the money you stole from your sister's coat after she went to bed. & it's time to repent, But you make your way To The Astro Motel instead, W your cocaine eyes. If you keep on running from The hounds you can't escape... If you keep on reaching for The hand you cannot save There won't be any time to make your getaway. All alone now In the Valley sun. All alone again, down & out again... In the Valley Sun. The sound that you make Is the sound of the key in the lock When you turn it the wrong way & it breaks, Oh it breaks. If you keep on running from The hounds you can't escape... If you keep on reaching for The hand you cannot save There won't be any time to make your getaway. You're out of time. It was 1987 School was out for good The Hydra of Summer was upon us. Old people & dogs were dropping like flies. That's the summer they found Earl the Pearl dead in a dumpster Behind the Tower Theatre W his arm bent back behind him Like a question mark. Yea, that's the same Tower Theatre Where those bikers shot Kimber Reynolds in the head. Joe Michael Davis Pushed his .357 into her ear & pulled the trigger...for her purse. He wanted her purse. Well.. the cops caught up to him Later on & gunned him down in the street. But that was later... Much later. That's the summer they found Marilyn Gay Ward Dead inside The Book Stall. The details of her murder were never released & her killer was never found... They never found who killed Earl Either...

Mary, the interstate Finally revealed my fate. I watched the sun burn red Outside Virginia @ 6am. As I rode along I started to hum you this song, Something new & different than The Motel Dirge inside my head. It goes like this: I love you, baby... & your wrists are white as stars. Mary, the human race is flawed & filled w hate. We can't change their minds, We can only sing the songs we write. They go like this: I love you, baby... As you sleep beneath the stars, Don't forget now, I love you, baby... As you spin beneath the stars We can only be just who we are. Mary, the interstate It winds & makes it's way & takes you far afield Where it's hard to know Just what is real. When you're a long way... When you're a long way from home. When you're a long way... Don't forget now, I love you, baby As you spin beneath the stars You can only be just who you are.

Fugue 04:02
I made my way like an angry fool. Across the railroad veins & all the shit I pulled. I changed my way, but the world's the same. Now I'm never going back again. I'm looking to you to guide me. I'm telling the truth it's all behind me. Because I wanna live where you can find me. I'm looking to you to guide me. She came to me & she made me see, That I was free, that I didn't have to live on repeat. I'm here to stay, I see you clearly. It's what I do now, not what I say. I'm looking to you to guide me. I'm telling the truth it's all behind me. Because I wanna live where you can find me. I'm looking to you to guide me. Ghosts never leave They're all living there inside you. it's hard to see w no memories to guide you. No memories to guide you. No memories.

There you stood on furrowed ground Where you once were king. Now you sit w your Spanish Dolls & the bullfights on t.v. Set in your ways, you never came around. The son that you raised Was the one that brought me down. On & on your river runs. The lonely San Joaquin. From the banks of a mighty flood I rose an angry sea. I couldn't be tamed. I wouldn't settle down. The boy your son raised Was the one who let him down. The moon stole away Your Andalusian blood. Now I'm all that remains of your name & the strange & brave men of Spain.
9.
Once, when I was five I slipped along the bottom Of an underground pool That had been emptied out. I fell backwards striking The back of my head. It was like walking along The surface of the Moon, Or, meandering The Dunes of Mars In defiance of the atmosphere.
10.
I knew you'd come dressed in a sweater. I know you'll stay, stay through the winter. & when we are done, I'll feel much better. I'd rather be dead, than sit here & wonder About you... The things that you sell: The Heatwaves of August; The Freeways & The London Motel. Can you be kind? I'll never be rid of The feelings you always remind me of. Your smile & your charm, Waltzing through Fresno in summer. I'll be alright again, Once you've left my side. Downtown is cold, the chill can be bitter. it's hard on the bums & the girls on the corner. When I see those lives on fire I know that it's you behind the pyre. Yes, you... & the things that you sell: The Bookstore Killer; The Freeways & The London Motel. Trouble be kind. Across the bridge to West Sacramento. I'll be alright again Once you're by my side.
11.
When you faced the first one. It just burned & then was warm. it took your heart. It's what you cannot have. There was hate when you were young. It turned to rage & what you'd become. & it made you want What you cannot have. She said, "Remember me son! Don't waste all of your love. There can be only one. Don't waste all of your love. Because you're heart can't hold What it cannot have" I guess it made you real small. Now that you can stand up tall. All your life It's what you cannot have.
