I don't know

We drove out through the dust
past the abandoned buildings
& the run-down warehouses.
Out to The Kingdom of Grapes
& The Luminous Peach Trees.
Out to where the chan-link fence
Bent down beneath the weight
O an ancient tree
& they were all there:
Fathers & Mothers & Sisters & Liars & Killers...
They were all buried there
& I left that town & I moved North
To where the river cut the city in half
& the trouble I made, kept me up for days.

California (Live)

Grapes cut a long green scar
Across the face of the Valley Floor
Like all wounds it tells the song
Of how the west was won
Out in California...
The harbour town is a killing floor
Washed w methamphetamines
& all the longshoremen's hands they bleed
Though a cracked glove upon the wheel.
Out in California, you'll find the sun
Up north the capital gain
Makes the rules for everyone
A man w a suit & a chain
He's w you, then he's gone
Crowned w a head full of thorns
Sodom & maybe Gomorrah
Out in California...
They spend their nights in bars
Then they ride off in a stretch limousine
Maps to the movie stars
Because they wanna make you believe
Out in California, you'll find the sun

There was a time & a place
I felt the wheel & it's grace
King Harvest sang in the fields
So we drank to what we made
Then the season changed
Soon I felt the long & the slow decay
Why must I be the thief?
Why must you see my grief?
I can't explain what comes over me.
Then I was crushed by The Weight
I hung it all up & I waved
Goodbye to the crowd & the hands from the stage
A whispering sound I received
Through the pines & the trees
In a motel dream I swam from the beach to the sea.
Why must I be the thief?
Why must you see my grief?
Tears of Rage roll down my cheeks
I can't explain what comes over me.
Home, so far away
Why must I be the thief?
Why must you see my grief?
Tears of Rage roll down my cheeks
I can't explain what comes over me.

The first time I saw Joni
She was standing outside the London Motel
She was standing there
Arms all akimbo, leering @ the men
Driving by on their way to work.
Her eyes were wine-red...
They were redder than mine.
Joni had a room there @ The London Motel
She took me up there to her room
& I stayed for about twenty minutes
Then she sent me on my way.
I saw Joni many times after that.
I saw her @ The London & The Astro
& The Stardust & The Sands.
Joni wasn't like the other girls,
She never tried to steal my money or my dope
& she use to refer to me to the others
As her sometimes boyfriend.
I guess I kinda liked that...
The room was rich w magazines
The chain had been released.
In the darkness you could see
Her fingers sick w rings.
There were no more wedding bells
& the planes had split the trees.
There you sat on the edge of the bed
w The Queen of the London Scene.
It was a time of infamy
A time of fallen kings.
In the courtroom, you'd been laid bare
The truth had been decreed.
You thought you might get away
Aw, you thought that you might break free,
That's when you found out that you'd been ensnared
By The Queen of the London Scene.
In the orchard while you dreamed
A shadow did appear
There was something cold & dark
Poured in your ear.
You tried to listen & you tried to hear
But there were only screams
& a mouthful of bad advice
From The Queen of the London Scene

Rain spills from the roof
& down the window
As if there is no air
Only water & soon
We will all be submerged.
The latch rattles in the wind.
Once when I was five
I slipped along the bottom
Of an underground pool
That had been emptied out
& fell backwards striking
The back of my head.
It was like walking
Along the surface of the moon
Which I have always wanted
To do, or, maybe, meandering
The dunes of Mars
in defiance of the atmosphere.
Who cares if it rains
Or if the wind becomes forceful
enough to unwind me
From my spot on the earth.
I was never here anyway.
I was always somewhere else.
& now that I have achieved greatness
I can relax. I can spend all day
Staring into the expiring sun
The one thing I have never understood
& have relied upon entirely
To keep me from turning into stone.

I couldn't stay in line
So I got out of line
I crossed the railroad tracks
W out ever looking back
Motel Row one more time
There's a feeling that I get
When I can't see what's coming next.
I stepped up to the table
& I placed a losing bet
Motel Row I'm home again.
Yes there was a time
When my life seemed to be just fine
But Chaos & Destruction
you were always on my mind
& people they seem to be so unkind
Motel Row Ill be alright
If you see me on the street
& wonder why I look so beat
I always start out winning
But I end up in defeat
Motel Row you saved my seat
Crawling around on the floor
Always looking for a little more
I always wondered what was behind that door:
The busted dreams of women
& the solemn arcs of men
Motel Row you ain't my fuckin' friend
Motel Row you win again
Aw there is nothing you can do
& aw there is nothing you can say
To change my mind
Or correct my wicked ways
Motel Row that's where I'm gonna stay.
Yes there was a time
When my life seemed to be just fine
But Chaos & Destruction
You were always on my mind
Yes my life was fine
On the surface you could see it shine
But I was always looking
For the glow of the neon sign
Motel Row I'll be just fine.

I knew you'd come dressed in a sweater
I know you'll stay, stay through the winter
& when we are done, I'll feel much better
I'd rather be dead than sit here & wonder about you...
& the things that you sell
The Heatwaves of August
The Freeways & The London Motel
Can you be kind?
I'll never be rid of the things you always
Remind me of
Your smile & your charm
Waltzing through Fresno in summer
I'll be alright again
Once you've left my side...
Downtown is cold, the chill can be bitter
It's hard on the bums & the girls on the corner.
When I see those lives on fire
I know that it's you behind the pyre
Yes, you & the stories you tell
The Bookstore Killer
The Freeways & The London Motel
Trouble be kind
I'll never be rid of things you always
Remind me of
Your smile & your charm
Across the bridge
To West Sacramento
I'll be alright again
Once you're by my side...
I still oversleep theses winter mornings
I still can't decide
Last night I desired only a stillness
In the wake of each thing
The air held inside a dead spider on the sill
Or a shell washed up this morning
Or even the air inside of a struck chord
When the pianist seems to lean over slightly
As if he strains to hear a note
Just under his own held breath
I wanted once, to be picked clean
By Music
By Wind
By Sunlight

When I use my eyes
I can see the sunrise
Here we are
When I wave goodbye
I hope that you will be there
When I come back home
Here we are
Lucky that we came this far
